Four youth charged after teenager stabbed to death in front of mother

Four young people, including three minors, were arrested on Tuesday in connection with the murder of a 14-year-old who was stabbed to death in front of his mother.

On Monday morning, 14-year-old Devan Selvay was killed in front of Sir Winston Churchill High School, which he attended. Two young men of 14 and 18 were arrested in the wake and face charges of premeditated murder.

Two other teenagers, a boy and a girl, both 16, were also arrested on Tuesday for murder and were to be interviewed by the investigators.

All four suspects attended Sir Winston Churchill High School.

According to witnesses told local media, Devan Selvay was attacked and stabbed in the back as he tried to enter his mother's car in front of the school.

The knife used to commit the crime was found by the police on Tuesday morning.

"This whole event is disturbing. It's difficult to understand at the moment. I can not imagine how the victim's family feels, "said Detective Sergeant Steve Bereziuk of the Hamilton police at a press briefing on Tuesday.

Sergeant Bereziuk mentioned that the killing appears to have been planned. However, he did not want to advance on the links between the victim and the suspects or on the motives of the armed aggression.

Teenage witnesses of the event filmed the scene. "I encourage people who are in possession of videos to contact us. […] I'm discouraging anyone from posting this information online, as it could be evidence, said Steve Bereziuk.

"There are no words to express how much we are affected by this loss. Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the student, "Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board Director Manny Figueiredo said in a statement.

"We can not tolerate acts of violence. We must promote acts of kindness and peace for the good of the entire Hamilton community, "continued Figueiredo. He said help will be provided to students and staff members who feel the need.
