TERRORISM – Two people were killed and two others seriously injured Wednesday in Halle, Germany, in a gun attack on a synagogue. We take stock of what we know about this anti-Semitic attack.

An "anti-Semitic attack" probably perpetrated by a sympathizer of the "extreme right" movement. The city of Halle, in eastern Germany, is in mourning this Wednesday night. A gun attack took place against a synagogue in the middle of Yom Kippur. Here is what we know about this attack.

What happened ?

It was mid-day when the attack began, when an individual attempted to enter the synagogue of the Paulus district in Halle, eastern Germany. Everything but a coincidence of the calendar: the faithful were gathered on this day of Yom Kippur, a Jewish religious holiday. About 70 to 80 people, said the president of the Jewish community of Halle, Max Privorotzki, were present in the place of worship. "We saw through the camera in our synagogue that a heavily armed attacker, with a steel helmet and rifle, tried to open our doors," he said.

Unable to do so, he then moved away and attacked a small Turkish kebab restaurant. He first threw a grenade that exploded against the door before firing inside. "The man shot at least once, the man sitting behind me had to die, I hid in the bathroom and locked the door," said one of the clients, Conrad Rössler, on NTV information channel.

What balance?

"Two people were killed in Halle, according to preliminary findings," the German police said on Twitter. According to the police, this is a woman and a man. Two others were seriously injured by gunshots. They were admitted to the University Hospital of the city.

What do we know about the suspect?

On an amateur video taken by many media and obviously showing an excerpt of the assault, there is a helmeted man, dressed in khaki and equipped with a belt of ammunition, apparently calm. He is seen shooting with an assault rifle in the street near a car. He then collapses, obviously hit by police fire, and stays a few seconds on the ground, before getting back into the vehicle and leaving.

According to the weekly Der Spiegel, the suspect is Stephan B., 27, from Saxony-Anhalt. He was injured and "treated," according to a spokesman for the local police.

What do we see on the video of the attack?

The alleged perpetrator himself filmed the shooting and broadcast the video on an internet platform, said the site SITE, specializing in the surveillance of terrorist organizations. In this 35-minute video, also viewed by AFP, this man, shaved head, youthful face, launches into an anti-Semitic diatribe. He says in English that "the Holocaust never existed" and considers that the Jews are at the root of all the problems. We see him trying to enter the synagogue by shooting in the door, then shoot down a passer-by in the back at random in the street. He then tries to put an improvised explosive device in a door of the religious building, without being able to make it work. He is also seen shooting at a Turkish restaurant customer at close range.

"We have done it as soon as possible to remove this content, and we will suspend any accounts that post or repost images of this abominable act," said a spokeswoman for Twitch, the platform on which the suspect aired his attack.
