A child of only 9 years old faces five charges of premeditated murder following a fire that broke out last spring in a mobile home in Goodfield, Illinois.
Woodford County Attorney Greg Minger announced Tuesday that the child, who can not be named because of his age, is charged with the murders of two adults, Kathryn Murray, 69, and Jason Wall, 34, and three toddlers, Rose Alwood, 2, Daemon Wall, 2, and Ariel Wall, 1.
All five had died as a result of the smoke inhalation, had demonstrated the autopsies as reported by the "Peoria Journal Star" Tuesday.
Two people, Katrina Alwood, 27, and her son had survived the blaze.
In addition to the murder charges, the child faces arson charges, including a serious arson charge, which suggests that the authorities believe the suspect was aware of the presence of the people in the home when he would have set it on fire.
The authorities decided to proceed with the laying of charges based on the results of their investigation. "It was a difficult decision. It is a tragedy, but in the end we had to charge a very young person with one of the most serious crimes. I think it had to be done, "commented prosecutor Greg Minger, according to statements relayed by the" Journal Star ".
Given his young age, the child should not be behind bars in a penitentiary. If convicted, he could likely be given a probationary period of several years, to which would be added therapy sessions and psychological assessments, said the prosecutor.
