CFL: Montreal Alouettes defeat Toronto Argonauts 27-24

MONTREAL – It was hard work, but the Montreal Alouettes defeated the Toronto Argonauts on Friday at Percival Molson Stadium.

The 17,003 spectators did not attend the most thrilling games in 2019, with both teams playing loose games. The Alouettes did enough to triumph over the Argos 27-24, getting the 300th win in home history.

It was a superb play from Jeremiah Johnson, with some 10 minutes left in the last quarter, which gave the Alouettes the lead for good. After catching a small veiled pass from Vernon Adams Jr., the veteran attacking half sneaked between the defenders to cross the 45-yard separating it from the end zone and carry the score to 20-17 after the conversion from a point of Boris Bede.

Adams quickly crossed the field on this offensive push consisting of two passes only for 66 yards.

Johnson was involved in the Alouettes' next push, crowned by Quan Bray's 18-yard touchdown pass. Johnson had a great 12-yard run, including the last six with four defensemen on the back.

Adams added another touchdown pass to the meeting, 10 yards to DeVier Posey. Bede completed the mark with placements of 36 and 40 yards. The replica of the Argos came from McLeod's hitters Bethel-Thompson, S.J. Green and Chandler Worthy. Tyler Crapigna made a 41-yard effort, but the Alouettes' special teams blocked another attempt.

In the end, this blocked kick will have made the difference on the result of the match.

The Alouettes controlled the first half, forging a 13-3 lead in the first two quarters. But the Argos came back strong, scoring 14 points unanswered back from the break to take the lead over the touchdowns of Bethel-Thompson and Green. But the Alouettes handed the money back to the Argos with 14 consecutive points in the final quarter.

The visitors made the end of the game exciting with Worthy's touchdown on a two-yard pass, second quarterback Bethel-Thompson, with just over a minute to play.

Toronto's defense then forced the Alouettes to clear after only 20 seconds, so the Argos took the ball at their 51-yard line with 25 seconds to go. After an eight-yard run by James Wilder Jr., Bethel-Thompson joined Jimmy Ralph, who went out on a touchdown with three seconds remaining, leaving Crapigna with a 51-yard effort, but he ran out of power.

Interesting plateaus

Some players took advantage of this meeting to reach interesting plateaus.

Alouettes attacking midfielder William Stanback first reached the 1,000 yard rush for the first time in his career with a five-yard run early in the third quarter.

Stanback then watched the end of the game from the sidelines. He finished his night of work with 49 yards on 11 races to bring his total to 1003 in 2019.

On the visitors' side, S.J. Green, meanwhile, was the 15th best receiver in circuit history. Last week, Green reached the 10,000-yard career. The Alouettes also paid tribute to their former colors before the game.
