More than 350 women and breast cancer specialists attended Wednesday evening an information meeting at the CHUM Research Center.

This evening was organized to better inform patients about their different options for the disease.

In particular, textured implants suspected of causing certain cancers have made headlines in recent months.

"We want to reassure patients. Scientific research continues. We want to give them all possible information about the options, with the risks and complications of each. Each patient chooses her surgery, "said plastic surgeon Joseph Bou-Mehri.

"There were several problems with the implants, lymphoma in particular. There have been 26 cases in Canada and about 600 in the rest of the world. "

Eight thousand women in Quebec have breast implants every year, whether for aesthetic or medical reasons.

A patient from the hospital came to testify about her struggle and also asked for more research on metastatic cancers.

"Unfortunately there are very few resources. I am fighting for these women. What I would like is more investments in metastatic cancer research, "said Patricia Estephan.

One in eight women will develop breast cancer in her life.

Approximately 6,000 new cases are diagnosed each year in Quebec, of which 25% require total mastectomy.
