For Forza Italia it was not a "mistake" to abstain on the birth of the commission proposed by Liliana Segre against hatred, racism and anti-Semitism. And neither, as he said it Mara Carfagna, a "betrayal of values". If the party, immediately after the decision not to support the creation of the special organization together with Fdi and Fi, had split, the president Silvio Berlusconi he intervened to claim a position. "Despite not having been able to directly follow what happened yesterday in the Senate," he wrote in a note, "I must forcefully reject any exploitation of the vote expressed by Forza Italia". So he took it out on one of his historic enemies: the left and the alleged threats to freedom of expression. "As liberals", he wrote again, "we are however against the excess of legislation on crimes of opinion and the motion submitted yesterday to the vote of the Senate, on which Forza Italia abstained, proposed, at the request of the left, the establishment of a new crime of opinion".

The problem for Berlusconi, however, is not only outside, but above all inside: there are many blue parliamentarians who dissociated themselves from the choice of senators. "I expect that in the Movement that I founded no one will be allowed to put forward doubts about our commitment alongside Israel. Positions and distinctions put in place for the sole purpose of feeding sterile polemics – above all on such a delicate subject – favor those who would like to portray us as what we are not and that even makes us horror. The discussions, always legitimate, take place inside and not at agency level: if someone wants instead to follow paths already traveled by others, he naturally has the freedom, but without further damaging Fi".

So the former Knight reiterated his closeness to Israel and the solidarity with the senator for life Segre: "Our position and my personal commitment against anti-Semitism and in favor of Israel and the Jewish world are a constant in 25 years of history political, and I consider profoundly offensive the mere fact of questioning our consistency on this matter. To Senator Segre I want to renew my esteem, the deepest solidarity for the ignoble attacks of which she was the object and my deep respect for her personal history which makes her a precious witness of a tragedy, theHolocaust, which was absolute evil, on which no revisionism, denial or underestimation is tolerable ". And he concluded by recalling his commitment to Israel: "Those who know recent history should know that our government was the closest to Israel in the history of the Republic and this has been acknowledged on several occasions by the Prime Minister of Israel and the Jewish communities in the world ". And he recalled: "I proposed publicly the entry of Israel into the European Union, because I believe that that nation and the history it represents are an integral part and fundamental root of our identity ".
