Actress Jane Fonda was arrested Friday as she was participating in a peaceful protest against climate change at the United States Capitol in Washington.

A total of 16 protesters were arrested for illegal protest and were charged congestion, blocking or disturbance.

The 81-year-old woman, well known for her activism, was handcuffed before being escorted inside a patrol car. A video of his arrest circulated on social networks. The actress was released a few hours later.

On Thursday, Jane Fonda promised to join the protesters on Capitol Hill, saying inspired and encouraged by the incredible movement created by youth.

Ira Arlook, a member of the activist group Fire Drill Fridays, who was organizing Friday's action, confirmed Ms. Fonda's arrest.

Before being handcuffed by the police, the actress delivered a speech to activists in which she described climate change as collective crisis requiring immediate collective action.
