USA opens investigation on whether Facebook compromised user data

"I am starting an investigation on Facebook to determine if their actions jeopardized consumer data, reduced the quality of consumer elections or increased the price of advertising," New York attorney general Letitia said Friday. James, in a statement.

"The world's largest social media platform must comply with the law," added James, who leads the bipartisan group of attorney generals who handle these investigations.

The investigation increases the pressure for the social media platform, which is already under the magnifying glass of the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Judicial Committee of the US House of Representatives.

Last month, Facebook agreed to pay $ 5 billion as part of an agreement with the FTC on charges of privacy violations.

Prosecutors said Friday that they will analyze whether Facebook's position may have allowed the company to take advantage of its customers or advertisers.

In addition to James, the attorneys general of the states of Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Nebraska, North Carolina, Ohio, Tennessee and the District of Columbia are involved in the investigation.

Facebook has three of the world's leading communications platforms, including Instagram and WhatsApp, as well as the Facebook platform.

According to data from the company itself, Facebook had more than 2.410 million monthly active users.

According to specialized media, Facebook and Google are known as the "digital duopoly" of the online advertising ecosystem, and some estimates indicate that the two companies control almost 60 percent of the Internet advertising market.

In fact, another group of state attorney generals is expected to announce an antitrust investigation on Google next Monday.
