"We inform with regret the death of the athlete Gabriel Schlichia Adriano," who on August 26 had turned 20 years old, the Paranaense Judo Federation said in a statement.
"His death surprised us a lot, but we hope he can be in a better place," the condolences note added.
The young judoca was found dead on Sunday afternoon inside the pool of a community of neighbors, in a neighborhood of the city of Curitiba, capital of the state of Paraná, in southern Brazil.
He was part of the lower categories of the Brazilian judo team and, in 2016, was a bronze medal in the Pan American Championship Sub 18 and South American champion, also Sub 18, in the light weight category (73 kilos).

He also signed several podiums in various Brazilian competitions both regionally and nationally.
"We appreciate all the messages of condolences received so far, which only show how dear he was to everyone, for his professionalism, intelligence, friendship and for being a great athlete. We must always remember him with joy and gratitude," said the Paranaense Judo Federation .
The body of Gabriel Schlichia Adriano was veiled on Monday in Curitiba and subsequently buried in the town of Colombo, located in the metropolitan region of the capital of Paraná.
