"M", the magazine of the newspaper "World", shines the spotlight on Hassan Hajjaj, one of the major figures of Moroccan contemporary art, who will present from September 11 to November 17 his first retrospective in France, at the European House of Photography (MEP), the temple of photography in Paris. "Hassan Hajjaj or Moroccan pop art," the French weekly in an article that draws the portrait and the atypical course of the one who "shot the portrait of Madonna in Berber fashion, diverted logos of brands and objects everyday, and is a sensation with a line of embroidered jackets. "
"Some fashion models are tearing off their eccentric clothes. The celebrities are drawn the portrait in his riad of Marrakech. Streetwear brands are clamoring for kitsch. As of 11 September, Hassan Hajjaj, a 58-year-old Moroccan-British creator, exhibited some 300 photographs at the European House of Photography (MEP), as well as, at the invitation of the RATP, some thirty images in the reams of the Paris metro. A mix of East and West that waltzes the often tight categorization of art, fashion and design, "writes the newspaper.
"The air of nothing, the almost sexagenarian hip-hopper has invented a new form of postcolonialism, colorful and casual," says "The World". In the early 2000s, dowsers of art began to take an interest in artists from the Arab world. "And they got their hands on him."
Worn by the galleries Rose Issa Projects and The Third Line, Hassan Hajjaj begins to conquer London and Dubai. In 2016, his Gnawa Bombs, reversible silk jackets, decorated on one side with traditional embroidery and on the other with portraits, launched with the creator Amine Bendriouich, make a sensation at Colette, in Paris, underlines the newspaper.
The following year, he photographed the actor Will Smith and signed the cover of "New York Magazine" with the rapper Cardi B. Since then, he immortalized Madonna, graced in beauty Berber, Jessica Alba and Gad Elmaleh. But at the MEP, Hassan Hajjaj kept himself from showing celebrities, otherwise "the gnaoua musician or the henna girl would have gone unnoticed". Because its goal is to touch before all the man or the ordinary woman, of Arab or African origin, which "can identify with images which do not represent only young blondes", notes the French newspaper.
