In particular, doctors wondered if it would be possible to regenerate the tissue of the thymus gland, a vital organ of the immune system that with age becomes clogged with fat. To this end, they set out to inject the test subjects the growth hormone. As this hormone promotes the development of diabetes, they decided to combine it with metformin and prasterone, two drugs commonly used against this disease.
The experiment, which lasted one year, resulted in the blood count improvement of the nine participants – men between 51 and 65 years old – while seven of them experienced a thymus regeneration. However, the lead author, Gregory Fahy, did not stop there and went to Steve Horvath, the famous geneticist who discovered the method to detect the biological age of people based on their genetic markers.
"Somewhat futuristic results"
Horvath detected that the biological age of all test subjects was lower than the real one, the average difference being around 2.5 years.
"I expected to see a clock slowdown, but not a reversal"Horvath told Nature magazine, rating the results – achieved for the first time in history – as "something futuristic".
In addition, he noted that genetic tests were performed six months after the subjects received the last dose of the medications, which indicates that the treatment has a lasting effect.
Although scientists indicate that the experiment should be repeated with more people and under tighter control, he believes that the results already available are quite credible.
"Because we were able to follow the changes within each individual, and because the effect was very strong on each of them, I am optimistic", he claimed.
