Vienna – Austrian double judo Olympic champion Peter Seisenbacher has been extradited Thursday by the Ukrainian authorities to Austria, where he faces serious allegations of child abuse.

Seisenbacher, 59, is already in a Vienna jail and in the next few hours a judge must decide whether to impose preventive detention on him, Austrian public radio reports.

The Olympic and world champion fled in December 2016, shortly before facing a trial in Vienna on the allegations of sexual abuse of two younger girls he trained in Vienna between 1997 and 2004.

The accusation includes the case of a third minor who claimed to have defended himself from the aggression, so the prosecution has also described the facts as an attempt to abuse authority.

The former athlete was arrested in the summer of 2017 in his Kiev apartment after being on the run for eight months, and since then Austria had demanded his delivery on numerous occasions.

Seisenbacher was released after his arrest because the events for which his extradition was requested had been prescribed in Ukrainian legislation.

Austria continued to insist on extradition and a recent legal change in Ukraine opened that possibility.

Faced with this situation, the former judoka tried to cross into Poland with a false passport last Saturday, but was discovered by the Ukrainian police and Kiev decided to hand it over to Vienna.

Seisenbacher, gold in Los Angeles 1984 and Seoul 1988, held various positions in Austrian sports organizations after retiring from the competition.

He was coach of the Austrian men's judo team until he was dismissed in 1991.

He subsequently served as coach of Georgia, until 2012, and after Azerbaijan.
