The National Hurricane Center (NHC) reported today, Saturday, that Hurricane Dorian intensified to category 2 after increasing its winds to 100 miles per hour (mph) while heading east of Canada.

The cyclone, which located 140 miles south-southwest of Halifax, Nova Scotia, is it moves northeast at a rate of 29 mph, and it could land in the afternoon hours today.

According to the forecasts, the center of Dorian would arrive in Nova Scotia in the afternoon or at dusk on Saturday, Prince Edward Island at night and Newfoundland and Labrador on Sunday.

The hurricane caused heavy rains in the United States that left up to 800 people trapped on an island in North Carolina and more than 200,000 without power, as it moved to Canada along the east coast.
The NHC said in its bulletin that a continuous movement of the hurricane to the northeast is expected with an additional increase in its speed.
During the night of yesterday the tropical system kept its winds at 90 mph so it achieved a gradual intensification despite being north of the Atlantic Ocean where the waters are colder.
