Toronto – Dorian it hit the Atlantic coast of Canada on Saturday with downpours and windows, where a construction crane collapsed in Halifax and more than 300,000 people were left without power, one day after it caused damage to several islands off North Carolina.
The people of Nova Scotia had prepared for heavy rains and possible flooding on the coast, and the authorities in Halifax asked people to hold heavy objects that could become projectiles. Businesses were encouraged to close early.
"We don't want the citizens of Halifax to walk through the center with the arrival of the waters," said Erica Fleck, deputy head of community risk reduction in Halifax, capital of the province, where 400,000 people live.
The post-tropical hurricane continued to weaken and showed sustained winds of 89 miles per hour, although they were mainly registered at sea, according to the Canadian Hurricane Center. He was expected to lose the hurricane force after passing Newfoundland on Sunday.
At 5:00 a.m., the center of the hurricane was 80 miles west of Cabo San Jorge.
The crane that collapsed crashed into the side of an apartment building under construction. At the southern end of the city, a roof was torn from an apartment complex and fireman Jeff Paris said several residential buildings were evicted. After the fall of the crane, trees and power lines, it is a fortune that has not been seriously injured or killed, he added.

"We ran out of electricity for hours, but we were well prepared," said Rim Rissesco, who lives on the east side of the Halifax pier in Dartmouth. “We stock up on snacks and food; we take refuge in the house to spend it with board games and watching the rain and the wind ”.
As Canada prepared for Dorian, flooding was down on Saturday in the area near the island chain called External Banks in North Carolina, where the hurricane caused a destructive current.
Apparently the hurricane caused the worst damage in the United States on Ocracoke Island, which even in good weather is only accessed by boat or aircraft, and is frequented by tourists for its poorly urbanized beaches.
The inhabitants said that the winds were bearable followed by a stream of water that flooded the first levels of many houses and some people climbed to their roofs to wait for rescue.
"We are used to cleaning branches and garbage that floats everywhere," said the inhabitant and owner of a business on Ocracoke Island, Philip Howard. "But now there is everything floating everywhere: picnic tables, doors and wooden boards."
In Canada, the hurricane made landfall on Saturday night near Sambro Creek, about 15 miles south of Halifax, with maximum sustained winds of 100 mph.
Dorian struck Nova Scotia and meteorologists predicted that it would pass near or on top of Prince Edward Island on Saturday night, and then move on Sunday to Newfoundland and Labrador.
Canadian authorities prepared for possible floods, currents and storm surge, and Public Security Minister Ralph Goodale said military forces were mobilized to assist Nova Scotia.
