A Canadian company found the way to convert the plastic in diesel fuel and gasoline, according to a report published Tuesday.
The technology is used by the Sparta Group company, the firm behind the pilot project known as Phoenix (Phoenix) to fuel their trucks.
"Five tons of plastic can be converted to about 1,057 gallons (4,000 liters)”, Said John O'Bireck, president of the Sparta Group, located in the city of Whitby, in southern Ontario.
“With 4,000 liters our fleet of 10 vehicles can travel its round trip every day, running 16 hours a day”added O'Bireck.
Trucks are used to transport industrial waste.
The technology uses high temperatures that cause the plastic to decompose, in a process known as pyrolysis. Plastics are cut into small pieces and enter an airtight container and heat without oxygen, so they don't really burn as they break down, O'Bireck said.

The plastics used are those that cannot be recycled and would otherwise end up in landfills.
"If you leave the plastic as it is, it will sink and stay there for a thousand years."said O'Bireck, who added that "in the industry they can take it and convert the plastic into fuel to be used".
In the province of Nova Scotia another project uses similar technology to convert plastic into fuel. Sustain Technologies Inc will use up to 50,000 tons of municipal waste per year when the project is fully operational.
Sheila McGrory, a Whitby official, is very happy that the pilot project is in the city.
“It seems that they are attracting a lot of international attention, people from various parts of the world are coming to see the plan in operation. It is a great project. It is very important for the future of the planet ”, he pointed.
