The ninth edition of the Rugby World Cup will take place from 20 September to 2 November in Japan in 12 stadiums across the archipelago.

The stadiums are scattered throughout the archipelago, hoping to popularize rugby in this country where it is still unknown.

It was at the end of the 19th century, however, that Japan discovered rugby when it saw British soldiers practicing garrison at Yokohama.

The emotion will be invited to the 2019 World Cup.

A stadium was erected specifically for competition in a northeastern city, Kamaishi, devastated by the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami.

The teams must submit by Monday their list of 31 players selected for the World Cup.

Remember that Canada qualified for the 2019 World Cup last November.

The Canadian team became the 20th and final national team to secure their ticket to Japan with a 27-10 win over Hong Kong.

It remains a preparatory game for Canadians before flying to Japan. It will be against the Americans on September 7th at BC's Vancouver Stadium.

"We are redoubling our efforts in preparation for the World Cup. We have a strong group of players that can be used at different positions at a good level, which bodes well for us, said coach Kingsley Jones.

"We have some very tough challenges ahead of us, but there is great energy in the team and we will go there and leave everything we can," added Kingsley Jones.

Ranking 21st in the world, the Canadian team is in Group B, with New Zealand, world number one, South Africa (5th), Italy (14th) and Namibia (23rd).

Canada's first game in the preliminary round will be Thursday, September 26 against Italy at Fukuoka Stadium.

Then the Canadians will face on Wednesday, October 2, New Zealanders in Oita, Tuesday, October 8 South Africans in Kobe and Sunday, October 13 Namibians in Kamaishi.

The quarter-finals begin Saturday, October 19th.

The 20 teams were divided into four groups of 5, ie 10 games per group, 40 games in total (48 counting the final phase):

  • Pool A: Ireland, Scotland, Japan, Russia, Samoa
  • Pool B: New Zealand, South Africa, Italy, Namibia, Canada
  • Pool C: England, France, Argentina, United States, Tonga
  • Pool D: Australia, Wales, Georgia, Fiji, Uruguay

Teams ranked 1 and 2 in each group qualify for the quarter-finals.
