Bitcoin risk keeps most women away from cryptocurrencies

Bitcoin (BTC) is less popular among women because they are less interested in risky investments, according to one of the best-known female cryptocurrency proponents.

Ryti: Women are "more risk conscious"

In a Twitter discussion On September 5, the winner of Miss Universe Finland 2015, Rosa-Maria Ryyti, argued that the Bitcoin risk factor made it more attractive to men.

She was answering a question from Cointelegraph analyst and collaborator, Filb Filb, who asked followers why the Bitcoin community was overwhelmingly masculine.

“Women are more aware of risk in general and often opt for a‘ slow and stable ’investment strategy,” Ryyti wrote, adding:

"The current general perception of Bitcoin in the MSM makes women (and men) even less likely to get involved."

Are cryptos changing gender balance?

Currently available data suggests that about 90% of Bitcoin users are men. The phenomenon has frequently sparked debate, with the creation of specific structures to increase the participation of women.

In June, Cointelegraph reported that 5% of Github's commitments related to the cryptocurrency code came from women. On the contrary, a report the following month suggested that of all cryptocurrency holders in Europe, up to 20% are women.

Ryyti herself rose to prominence more recently, participating in the Lightning Torch Bitcoin transaction relay earlier this year.
