Several local media estimate that the death toll can rise to 3,000 and indicate that mass burials are taking place.
Ferguson said that in New Providence, where the capital, Nassau, as in Abaco and Grand Bahama, there is not enough capacity to deposit the bodies and remain in plastic bags and in refrigerated containers as a "temporary measure."
"We offer our sincerest condolences to the families that have lost their loved ones to the cyclone," he added.
The Bahamians "should know that we are still looking for the disappeared and that the local police and security forces provided by neighboring countries are still in the task of finding more people to bring peace to many families," he added.
He confirmed that around 4,500 people have been evacuated from the Abaco Islands and Grand Bahama to the capital, since the passage of Hurricane Dorian a week ago, and by the end of the day it is expected that they are already 5,000 "or more."
Hundreds of people are missing and 70,000 have no housing, according to UN data.
Bahamas Prime Minister Hubert Minnis said Monday that he will decree a National Day of Duel for the dead, although he has not specified when.
Speaking to the media after visiting Grand Bahama, Minnis said the deceased should be "cried properly."
"I will decree a National Day of Duel in honor of those who died as a result of the devastation" caused by Dorian, he said.
Villagers claimed, through their accounts on social networks, to have counted hundreds of bodies in their localities.
