The opening session of the Summit was attended by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
Before the start of the TICAD VII work, the Director General of the Middle East and North Africa at the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Katsuhiko Takahashi, reiterated Tokyo's steadfast stance on this issue.
"Japan does not recognize" Western Sahara "as a state, this is a constant and immutable position, and Japan does not intend to change it," said the senior Japanese official who, in addition to his Political Director General, occupies the distinctive position of Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Taro Kono.
This position is similar to that expressed by many international powers, including the United States, the European Union and many countries in Europe, Africa, Asia and Latin America.
The work of the 7th Tokyo International Conference on the Development of Africa (TICAD-VII) opened on Wednesday morning in Japan with the participation of a large Moroccan delegation.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Mr. Nasser Bourita, who represents Morocco at this conference, leads a delegation including the Minister Delegate for African Cooperation, Mr. Mohcine Jazouli, the Ambassador of Morocco to Japan Mr. Rachad Bouhlal, Ambassador-Director of Asian Affairs and Oceania at DFAIT, Mr. Abdelkader El Ansari, and Ambassador-Director General of the Moroccan Agency for International Cooperation, Mr. Mohamed Methqal.
The conference is also attended by many Moroccan economic operators, including CGEM, AMDIE, MASEN and Attijariwafa Bank, as well as other national institutions and representatives of civil society.
Under the theme "Advancing Africa's development through people, technology and innovation", the summit, which has the participation of more than 4,500 people, aims to conduct consultations and debates on the theme development of the African continent and other issues related to security and stability.
Launched by Japan in 1993, the TICAD Summit is an international conference on African development organized by the Japanese Government, jointly with the United Nations, the United Nations Development Program, the United Nations Commission of the African Union and the World Bank.
