The National Hockey League Players' Association (NHLPA) will meet next Wednesday in Chicago to discuss the collective agreement that binds players to the National League (NHL).
This news has been reported on Twitter by the TSN network. The union has until September 15 to decide to avail itself of the option of premature termination. The current agreement is in effect until September 2022, but an early end of the agreement could take place as early as 2020 if one of the parties chooses this avenue.
NHL leaders have until next Sunday to avail themselves of their termination option. Gary Bettman's right-hand man, Bill Daly, had assured two weeks ago that negotiations were cordial between the two parties.
The executive director of the players' union, Donald Fehr, did not want to talk too much about the situation, preferring to focus on the upcoming negotiations. The possibility of a lockout, like that of the shortened 2012-2013 season, is real if the NHL and its players do not get along.
