A man in his forties called the firefighters saying he was injured in ankle and hung on a rock, after a fall during a hike in Cessenon-sur-Orb in Herault.
As soon as the call was received last Friday, about twenty rescuers, firefighters and gendarmes, launched research. At the end of the day, the missing person was still not found despite this extensive deployment and the use of specialized dogs. The next day, the search resumed.
Overview in a neighboring town
After two days of intense searches, the applicant was seen in the neighboring commune of Murviel-lès-Béziers, about ten kilometers away. The forty-year-old was arrested by the gendarmes and placed in police custody, reports France Blue.
He wanted to bring about an emergency deployment "as in Italy"
The mis en cause was already known to have practiced this kind of malicious call once previous. During his hearings, he explained that he wanted to provoke the deployment of relief " as in Italy ". He was referring to the research undertaken for Simon Gautier, the young Frenchman who fell while hiking and was found dead.
Penal sanctions
The false hiker in distress is now prosecuted for "disclosure of false information likely to cause the intervention of the relief". He incurs two years of prison and 30 000 euros of fine.
