OTTAWA – Canada is playing a leading role in a forthcoming film that will feature China's ambitions to dominate the world through technology – which was directed by Donald Trump strategist Steve Bannon.
The movie "Claws of the Red Dragon" is a fiction "inspired" by Canada's arrest of Huawei leader Meng Wanzhou and retaliatory measures taken by the government. China, including the detention of two Canadians allegedly for espionage and the death sentences passed on two other Canadians found guilty in drug cases.
Bannon said the film was intended to reveal the links between Huawei, which he describes as "the biggest threat to national security" in the United States, and the Chinese communist government, which he says is " the greatest existential threat that the West has ever faced ".
He also made it clear that his goal was to reinforce the resolve of US President Donald Trump to prevent Huawei from developing next-generation wireless networks, lest the telecommunications giant be controlled by the Chinese government and its equipment is not used to spy on or sabotage other countries.
The film is scheduled for release next month by New Tang Dynasty, a member of the Epoch Media group, closely associated with the Falun Gong spiritual movement and including The Epoch Times, pro-Trump and fiercely anti-Beijing.
The 54-minute film follows fictional Chinese-Canadian journalist Jane Li reporting on Canada's arrest of Huaxing Hi-Tech's chief financial officer. On her way, she "highlights the links of the company" with the Chinese Communist Party and the Chinese army, according to a press release issued by New Tang Dynasty.
The film features a Canadian cast including Eric Peterson from "Street Legal" and "Corner Gas".
A trailer of the film, punctuated by disturbing sounds, shows Eric Peterson, who plays a character named James MacAvoy and strangely resembling Canada's former ambassador to China, John McCallum, who meets a Canadian in detention named Michael .
In real life, Canadians Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor have been detained in China since December. They were charged with espionage soon after Canada arrested Ms. Meng, whom the United States wants to try for fraud and evasion of US sanctions imposed on Iran.
The trailer also shows Peterson telling someone who looks a lot like Prime Minister Justin Trudeau that the Chinese "arbitrarily condemned a Canadian to the death penalty. We do not know where these reprisals will end.
In the New Tang Dynasty press release, Steve Bannon described the film as a "reference book" arriving at a convenient time to "unveil the inner workings" of the Chinese Communist Party and Huawei.
"Chinese Communism is the greatest existential threat the West has ever faced," said Bannon. Huawei, the technological and telecommunications arm of the Chinese Communist Party and the People's Liberation Army, is the greatest threat to national security we have ever faced, as it is already trying to dominate the global technology through (wireless) 5G and 6G networks. "
Steve Bannon told Bloomberg earlier this month that he hoped the film would be screened for Donald Trump at the White House.
