Pulmonologists, against new ways of smoking

They warned that electronic cigarettes such as vaping devices not only do not serve to quit, but they are not safe either.

Given the continuous progress of this electrical system, which people believe is less harmful, the Spanish Society of Pneumology and Thoracic Surgery (Separ) came to warn again that both electronic cigarettes and vaping devices not only do not serve to abandon the habit, but they are not safe either: they have the same substances as conventional tobacco.

The pulmonologist Juan Antonio Riesco, a member of the Separ, said through a statement that these new mechanisms can favor the onset of chronic respiratory diseases, such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), or worsening them in the patients who were already diagnosed.

The main risk factor for developing COPD is the consumption of tobacco since there are substances originated during the combustion and pyrolysis processes that occur when the cigarette is lit and consumed. These are free radicals and other chemical substances that lead to the development of 'oxidative stress' phenomena and these, in turn, lead to the release of substances that favor the development of the mechanisms involved in the development of this serious disease. .

According to Separ's research on the production of these same substances present in conventional tobacco and in the new techniques, oxidizing substances and chemical components such as acrolein and acenaphthene are detected, especially toxic to the lung. "We can say that the new ways of smoking are not effective in helping smokers to quit smoking nor are they safe, since they can favor the development of asthma or COPD or its worsening in patients already diagnosed," Riesco said.

Although it is common to see them displayed for sale in stores, in Argentina, since 2011, electronic cigarettes are illegal. That year the National Administration of Medicines, Food and Medical Technology prohibited its importation, distribution, marketing and advertising or any form of promotion, considering that "there is no evidence to conclude that they are an effective aid to quit smoking."

  1. Four years ago I experienced a severe breathing and wheezing problem that my doctor diagnosed as chronic bronchitis with dust allergy. A year later, it worsened and I was diagnosed of COPD. I came across Herbal HealthPoint [ww w. herbalhealthpoint. c om] December, 2018 and learnt about their successful herbal therapy for COPD. I immediately started on the COPD treatment; few weeks into the treatment, i began to notice a reduction in symptoms till it all vanished. I feel better and breath better. I Just wanted to share for people suffering from this horrible lungs disease.
