June 17 is the International Day to Combat Desertification and Drought. This date was not chosen at random: it is the date of the adoption in 1994 of the Convention to Combat Desertification by the United Nations.
The UN General Assembly also declared the period between January 2010 and December 2020 UN Decade devoted to deserts and the fight against desertification.
