Coronary pressure in prisons: recommendation to release 560 prisoners

According to the Ministry of Health, no prisoner has been infected with the Corona virus so far.
However, in the prison service
Feel well the pressure and fears between the walls. As a result, a document from the IPS Research Division was submitted on Thursday recommending the early release of 560 prisoners.

All prisoners on the list are expected to be released soon anyway, and in fact their release will be promoted a month. The criteria for release include Israeli residents serving up to four years in prison. The list does not include sex offenders, domestic violence offenders and those belonging to criminal organizations.

Prisoners who spoke to their relatives and Ynet expressed concern about the spread of the virus in Israel. “We cannot maintain complete isolation here,” prisoners said. “How can a whole wing be taken out into the yard and kept from being crowded?”

According to sources on the subject, even in the case of infection, it is impossible to isolate a prisoner who has been in Corona. In this case, the prisoner will be transferred to an isolated facility in a cell similar to a dungeon. “It will be a punishment for punishment,” prisoners said, “and we are not talking about the health risk. There are hardly any antiseptics, nor is there really a doctor here. People here are under pressure, you can’t really maintain isolation. What are we in a lab experiment?”

Evidence of IPS distress is reflected in a decision today in Tel Aviv District Court following an appeal filed by police. Following a suspected arrest for operating a drug lab containing 100 pounds of cannabis, the city’s magistrate’s court decided to send him into custody at the end of the investigation.

In identical cases, and especially after prosecutor statements are filed before indictments, the suspects are usually sent to detention until the end of the legal proceedings. However, attorney for the suspect, Attorney Yaki Kahan, argued that the state could not guarantee safe detention conditions against contagion in Corona.

Police appealed to the district court, but Judge Irit Kalman accepted the suspect’s attorney’s argument and released his client into house arrest. “The representative of the appellant was unable to reply if the Ministry of Health’s instructions regarding the distance between the detainees could be complied with,” Judge Kalman noted in her decision, “and therefore in these circumstances I do not accept the appeal and order the respondent’s release.”

The judge added: “Due to the special circumstances and the fear of being infected with the Corona Department, additional considerations should be exercised.”
