States have been asked for ad hoc measures to be applied by April 30 to avoid interference from non-European countries

“Network security is of strategic importance” Brussels explains that because of its less centralized architecture, the need for more antennas and the increased dependence on software, 5G has more access points for attacks. “Operators are largely responsible for the safe development of 5G, and the Member States are responsible for national security, but network security is a matter of strategic importance for the whole EU,” writes the Commission. This is why “we need a coordinated approach” based on “robust security measures at national and European level”.

“Avoid dependency on a single supplier” It is therefore necessary to strengthen the security requirements for mobile operators (for example, by setting strict access controls, rules on safe monitoring, limits on the outsourcing of specific functions), as well as assessing and limiting operators at risk. In addition, Brussels calls on States to ensure that each operator has an appropriate multi-distributor strategy to avoid or limit dependency on a single supplier (or suppliers with similar risk profiles). This means “avoiding any situation in which you get stuck with a single supplier, even by promoting the interoperability of the equipment”.

For its part, the Commission will support the implementation of the EU 5G security plan, using “all the tools available”. In other words: TLC rules and cybersecurity, coordination of standardization, screening of foreign investments, trade defense instruments, competition rules, procurement rules, emphasizing the security aspect, EU-funded programs, ensuring that beneficiaries comply with safety.
